Facing the loss of a pet is incredibly painful. One minute they’re buzzing around, and the next, you’re stripped of a whole piece of your heart—a feeling incomparable to any. You can catch your breath now. You are not alone in this time. Most importantly, it is not hopeless.
Using a combination of experience, community wisdom and a touch of Pawrpose, here is a step-by-step plan that can be very helpful in your quest for locating your pet.
Step 1: Remain Calm and Act Fast
- Pacing yourself in a time-sensitive scenario can change the outcome drastically for the better. Focus on the first 24 hours.
- Be sure to check immediately areas such as porches, sheds, fences, and even trees.
- Gently call out to the pet using their name. Jumping to panic mode may alter the tone of your voice, therefore worsening the situation.
- To take it a notch further, stir a bag of treats. Pets respond well to sound and scent.
Step 2: Go Digital
- The use of social media can amplify your reach, so why not use them hand in hand? Post everywhere including Facebook, Pawboost, Nextdoor and Pet FBI and of course Pawrpose. Don’t forget to use local community groups, create your group via Pawrpose, post alerts and find nearby volunteers to come help you on looking for your beloved pet.
- Utilize old-fashioned methods such as pamphlets. Make sure to add a clear photo, contact information, specific address and even a reward for tips. They can go a long way!
Step 3: Alert Vets, Shelters & Animal Control
- Most commonly, lost pets are brought to a vet clinic or shelter. Do not leave any possibilities unturned:
- This means contacting each and every shelter and not just the nearest one to you.
- If possible, try to show up in person. Descriptions tend to get rather ambiguous; your eyes work best in this case.
- Make sure to visit every shop and leave a flyer along with your provided contact details for the place you are leaving the flyer at.
Step 4: Do Not Undervalue The Power of Community
- These people are your eyes and ears.
- Ring the bell of each house and show them spaces such as garages, decks, sheds, or other small openings that are usually ignored.
- Talk to drivers who make deliveries, as well as postmen and waste collectors. These people are always outside and tend to pay attention to details that other people overlook.
- Use succinct phrases while sharing the community pages and make sure to update multiple times.
Step 5: Remain Peaceful With The Wish For Safety But Stay Structured
- In a lot of days or weeks, pets tend to return home on their own. Staying active is important:
- These pets need regular updating sets of flyers and social media posts.
- Check back at shelters and online listings frequently.
- Don’t lose hope if you haven’t spent more than a few days. Some pets manage to stay on the roads for weeks.
Additional: Repeat, Chip, and Tag Them As They Come Home.
Now that your pet is safe, it’s time to take CT scans along with a breath of relief.
- While being welcoming her home make sure she has a collar along with an ID tag.
- Think about getting an AirTag or GPS tracker for added reassurance.
- Take a moment to walk around your house or yard to close up any potential escape points.
